I would never have seen that film if I didn’t have my son ::eek

Yeah scary :-) When this one is done I’m moving on to two CMAX chassises… chassi? Or chassis?!? ::thumb::

Anyways, got most of the bed done. Waaay to much repetition in there ::yikes

Next up snorkel, air tanks and so on to stop it from looking like something out of Moon Patrol.

Well wait for the mess I made last night –

neonsnow78, a guy in the US who works on these trucks, went to all the trouble to take and then post photos of the dashboard for me, and I repay that effort with the goof of the month.

    RefDashboard01.png

    RefDashboard02.png

And mine – four vent controls, only three vents

    Dashboard02.jpg

The left side of the instrument panel isn’t all that accurate either, but I suspect it’ll do, given that the dashboard is pretty visible through those big windows, but inaccuracies not that obvious from the outside.

It’s not finished yet, so it may change anyway.

Your toggle switch below the heater vent isn’t toggly enough but it’ll pass I guess as I’ll see it from the outside. Seriously cool dashboard. ::thumb::

I’m so sorry about that toggle switch. I can do better. I will do better ;) Anyway until then, lights. They took some thought. Ended up using the bumper lights from a China JK for the indicators, and China JK headlights for the headlights.

I have 16mm ⌀ electrical conduit which is good for the indicators, and I have 22mm ⌀ PVC pipe, but need something 20mm ⌀ for the headlights. So I ordered some in that I found on Ebay, but that came with an 18mm inner diameter. So I had to dremel that back to a 19mm inner diameter.

    Lights01.jpg

Once assembled and plugged into the front bumper it looks like this:

    Lights02.jpg

Headlights look all milky because of the CA glue. Think I’m leaving it like that – I kinda like it.

    Thank you ::thumb::

Just watched Transformers 4, and did a double-take. Here’s Hound, the weapons specialist who took over from Ironhide, who was the weapons specialist in Transformers 1 to 3:

    Hound02.png

And this is Hound in non-transformed guise:

    Hound01.jpg

How awesome is THAT? He’s an Oshkosh ::eek Going to stick with my original paint plans, but… wow. If you’re interested, Hound is in Transformers 5 (Last Knight) too, but in 5 he’s no longer an FMTV, but an Unimog ambulance. Because in 5 he’s the weapons guy and the medic.

Oh and a picture of mine with the hatch, and I streamlined those window rubbers.

Thanks Geoff ::thumb:: The plan at this stage is winter camo – white, with two tones of very light grey. The idea is really to go with something where scratches won’t show up so much.

Sunday is LSTR day and once again I gave away my only working truck (the body, at least) ::doh:: so this needs to run by then. To that end I started and almost finished the battery tray, which holds the wiring and gives the bed something to mount to. Still needs latches.

    BatteryTrays01.jpg

After the latches are done I need to mount the cab to the front fenders, the bed to the battery trays, and wire everything up. I should make it.

Got the battery trays done. Latches are secured with magnets, and the rear lower links are 7mm longer to straighten up the shocks and give a little more clearance between the tyres and the fuel tanks. Could do with 3mm more but time.

    BatteryTrays02.jpg

    BatteryTrays03.jpg

The battery trays are not quite as neat as the ones on the Ford F15a, but these were done in two nights as opposed to the 3 or 4 days in the Ford’s.

That leaves mounting the cab and bed, which will happen tomorrow afternoon. It’s nowhere near finished, but will at least be running for Sunday’s LSTR meet.

This is pretty much how it will run tomorrow. Next up electronics. Keeping it simple for tomorrow’s test run – no winch, no lights.

If I have any time left this evening I might get the bed mounted too.

Sunday’s test run was very successful. First up a very rare shot of an Oshkosh stalking a gate marker in some brutally vicious English grasslands…

    Rc_Oshkosh_Fmtv_shake_down_01.jpg

The only problem I had was the terrible approach angle – the bumper needs to be stronger, it really gets a lot of abuse.

    Rc_Oshkosh_Fmtv_shake_down_02.jpg

The now-retired Oshkosh HEMTT was a good climber, but this one blows that one out the water. It’s crazy good. Like (I’m probably exaggerating, but that’s how it looked) 60° climbs. And proportionately terrible at descents. The drag brake on 100% was evil – back off the throttle too quickly and… perfect forward 360. I suspect when I get the weight balanced out, I’ll have sacrificed some of it’s climbing ability to make the descents more stable.

Still getting mileage out of that XR mod ::cool

    Rc_Oshkosh_Fmtv_shake_down_05.jpg

And finally an awesome view of (I think, please someone correct me if I’m wrong) the start of the South Downs seen from the Chiltern Hills, before driving back home to London.
