Man, looking killer already! Wheels and tires are so cool. I have a feeling that white sharpie will come in handy a little later in the build.. 🙂

Cheers fella, funny you should say that about the Sharpie, I’m so concerned about mucking up the writing I’m thinking it’s best to do it in something I can rub off easily, what that is I don’t currently know.

I would suggest white chalk markers:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/White-Chalkboard-Chalk-Markers-Variety/dp/B071F5ZCQV
The only downside being that it may rub off too easily – maybe something like a spray ‘fix’ for charcoal/graphite could make it more durable but I wouldn’t know how that may affect the base paint (I would mask off as much as possible as the spray fixative stays tacky for quite a while).
Just my two-penneth worth; it borders on my specialist area of print/design processes!

Cheers chap. Well I’m frustrated by the cold weather and the absence of a heated spray booth. I have therefore been working on other bits. In this case the grill and lights the former of which I sprayed in satin black, not caring about the temperature coz meh, not looking for a showroom finish here. The side lights and indicators in Clarkson’s Range Rover are in the later stages of the episode held in place with what looks like gaffa tape and whilst I’d normally do the indicators in orange, Clarkson’s seem to be a faded yellow colour.
In an attempt to recreate the gaffa tape I painted some Tamiya masking tape with Tamiya titanium silver paint and then cut out some strips and applied them. I’m pretty pleased with the result. I’ve also weathered up the whole assembly.

Thanks chap, when it comes to spray painting, I genuinely have no idea how things are going to turn out. Sometimes I’m really pleased, sometimes I’m very much not yet am not aware of doing anything differently.
As such I got bored of waiting around for the weather to improve so I could get some paint on the shell. I therefore employed a small greenhouse heater which belonged to my parents many moons ago and heated the garage up to a useable temperature.
It’s my first time using spray enamel paint, it went on pretty well, certainly well enough as a base for plenty of abuse and weathering.
Before spraying I added some more dents to the roof and a few other areas to try to match the state of the actual vehicle about two thirds into the film.
One other thing I belatedly noticed was that the front windows are different on Clarkson’s to the JSScale version. There’s a quarter light on Clarkson’s so I need to add a vertical window bar and cut out the mirror mount a bit.

Mark is right. For a change. Exactly what he said.

Cheers guys, well the next stage is various details have been added. Firstly the passenger side (left hand drive) rear light is broken on Clarkson’s but only in so much as the side reflector has come off, probably dislodged by something in the rain forest. The 4dr kit from JSScale has a blank plate for the fuel filler so I had to cut that out and fashion a recessed one. As I didn’t use the cap from my 2dr build I was able to use it on this, after I’d doubled its thickness with some styrene.
Incidentally the rear bumper is also different on the 4dr kit, fortunately I have another 3dr kit which I’m intending to bob and run without a rear bumper so I nabbed that one and sprayed it in satin black.
BTW the way you might notice that the red looks quite different. The camera really struggles to catch it correctly and it looks weird under artificial light. In natural light the match is much closer, plus it’s far too shiny at the moment. However I have a horrible feeling this early 80’s Range Rover may have been resprayed in the later Trocadero Red introduced in the late 80s or early 90s, eek, too late now!
Tape holding on what’s left of the other rear light. The tailgate handle on Clarkson’s is also missing.
Front grill fitted and the black bits blacked.
Clearly lots of weathering to do and shininess to be removed.

As I mentioned before I hadn’t noticed that the front doors on the JSScale 4dr kit were single window ones as opposed to the slightly older design featured on Clarkson’s vehicle with the quarter light. I’ve got this sorted now by cutting out a frame from some styrene, gluing the windows in place and then gluing the new frame to the windows and the existing door.
Other detailing jobs I’ve done include painting the door handles, adding the side protection strips (painted in black with a thin strip of silver done with a Sharpie) and general weathering. I also took the plunge and had a crack at the ‘I heart my septum’ writing. I’m pretty pleased with it, thanks for the suggestion on the chalk pen Grasshopper, it does rub off perhaps a little too easily, but I’d rather that than not be able to remove it at all.
Incidentally the paint has darkened further as it has dried, and with the weathering I reckon it’s now of passable similarity to the original.
